All vehicles registered in Connecticut—with a few exceptions—must pass an emissions inspection every two years, or during a qualifying event.
If a vehicle fails its emissions test, the problem must be corrected and the vehicle must pass re-inspection within 60 calendar days of the initial test. The vehicle is entitled to one free retest per test cycle.
The CT DMV recommends choosing a Certified Emissions Repair Facility (CERF) for repairs. These facilities employ a Certified Emissions Repair Technician (CERT) who has successfully passed the required state training program on the repair of emissions problems.
Only repairs performed by a CERT are eligible to be applied towards a cost waiver.
